or: Listen Up

So, I’m flipping through film libraries on the TV the other day when “Summer Stock” shows up. Not the greatest musical Hollywood ever made but, it does contain one of the greatest musical numbers ever put to film in the form of Judy Garland’s “Get Happy”. 

It also contains one of the greatest examples of an actor “listening” as you’re likely to see as Gene Kelly explains the magic of the theater to farm girl Judy. Suspicion, bewilderment, curious, enraptured, excited, confused… the range of expressions she runs through is almost a dance of its own. 

What does all this have to do with comics? Nothing. So, we’ll pretend this is Mary Jane Watson in a revival of Sumer Stock.
